// Meet Journey the Jag, world traveler //

As one of IUPUI's study abroad social media ambassadors, this little mascot is planning on going with me next week on my trip to India! Our group of Kelley business students will be visiting companies and meeting with entrepreneurs over there to learn about doing business in an emerging economy.

I am not quite sure what part of the trip I am looking forward to most - maybe just experiencing India - the sounds, smells, and overall busyness. India is the second most populous country in the world, but it is projected to have more people than China by 2022!

Arrived safely in India! Biggest impression so far: traffic

Because why use a four-lane road for four lanes of traffic when you can fit six??

"In some countries they drive on the right side of the road. In other countries they drive on the left side of the road. In India they drive on all sides of the road."

"There is a right way of driving, a wrong way of driving, and an Indian way of driving."

"Do you know why they honk all the time? They are saying, 'we are still here. We aren't dead meat yet.'"

"A red light means go if you think you've got this."

~ Within India are many Indias ~

Jaipur the pink city is very beautiful and full of historic monuments - and McDonald's!

Actually, McDonald's is fairly common throughout India. They have succeeded here by adapting to the different cultural environment. For example, they have replaced Big Macs (which contain beef) with the McVeggie.

India has over a billion people.

You can't fully appreciate that number until you experience the blaring horns, the shoving crowds, the bright fabrics, the people literally everywhere. It's so alive.

The landmarks and monuments are incredibly beautiful. Pictures can't begin to do them justice. Just look at the tiny people here. The Taj Mahal is so much bigger and more impressive than I'd imagined! I've loved visiting these places and learning about their rich history.

There is more. There are the children selling trinkets or begging, people sleeping in whatever corner or street median they can find, lower socioeconomic class individuals treated as less important... More than anything else I am struck by the contrasts seen in this place. Like every other country in the world there is poverty and wealth, dirt and beauty, prejudice and respect, brokenness and hope.
