What are Professional Dispositions and Why are They Important?

What Are Professional Dispositions?
Dispositions are defined as "the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors towards colleagues and communities and affect student learning, motivation, and development as well as educational growth.  Dispositions are guided by beliefs and attitudes related to values such as caring, fairness, and honesty.  For example, they might include the beliefs that all students can learn, a vision of high and challenging standards, and a commitment to a safe and supportive learning environment" (NCATE, 2000).  

Why Are Dispositions Important?
The National Council of Teacher Accreditation (NCATE) has mandated that teacher education programs assess teacher education candidates' knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to help all students learn (NCATE, 2000).  Also, research shows that the attributes of the classroom teacher significantly affect students and their achievement.
