Professionalism defined: "Getting the job done, even done well, is good enough for nonprofessionals, but continually improving the way the job is done both for themselves and others is the hallmark of professionals" (Glasser, 1993, p. 12).
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), in 2004, set forth five propositions that exemplify a professional teacher. These five propositions are:
1) Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
2) Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
3) Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
4) Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
5) Teachers are members of learning communities.
Being a professional means making a conscientious effort to work at every aspect of teaching and setting high standards for yourself and your students.
