El Cante Flamenco

A study of contemporary flamenco music
Spain This unit will take approximately 6-7 class periods (50 minutes each) for activities and assessments. It will involve 2 class periods for readings and video presentations of songs (interpretative) and communication circles (interpersonal); one scheduled class period in the computer lab; one class period for students to work on group projects; and 2 class periods for class presentations.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES AND STANDARDS ASSESSED:
1. Students will be able to identify the art form of el cante flamenco, listing the historical influences in chronological order (Interpretive and Presentational Communication)

2. Students will be able to respond to questions in a conversational manner regarding the messages and themes of el cante flamenco as seen in two music videos in class (Interpretive and Interpersonal Communication)

3. Students will be able to locate the regional and provincial differences of el cante flamenco on the map of Spain (Interpretive Communication)

4. Students will be able to identify and describe the different characteristics, themes and messages of the various styles of flamenco music (Interpretive and Interpersonal Communication)

5. Students will be able to describe a specific, researched component of the historical background of el cante flamenco, using the vocabulary learned about this musical, interpretive art form, and then present to the class
(Interpersonal and Presentational Communication)

6. Students will be able to summarize information about a chosen art form and the intented message as contrasted to el cante flamenco, focusing on the similarities between the two works (Interpretive and Presentational Communication)

7. Students will be able to research and summarize information about an artist and his/her work and present to the class a brief biography of the artist and how the work relates to and supports the style of el cante flamenco (Interpretive and Presentational)

2. Assessment:
a. Interpretive Phase:
*After viewing two current flamenco videos and learning the lyrics (las letras) for a "Chambao" song--"Dibujo en el Aire", the students will complete the Interpretive Task Worksheet "El Cante Flamenco"
* Using the Interpretive Task Rubric for "El Cante Flamenco" students will be assessed and receive teacher feedback

b. Interpersonal Phase:
*Using the Interpersonal Task Worksheet "La historia del cante flamenco" students will chose one historical theme about flamenco (pre-approved by teacher) , chose an on-line reading, divide parts and present information to class, using the criteria as outlined on worksheet
*Students present as groups but speak individually and are assessed individually using the Interpersonal Task Rubric "La historia del cante flamenco" and are provided feedback on the rubric sheet that will be returned to them the following class

c. Presentional Phase:
*Students prepare for Individual Oral Presentations "El Cante Flamenco en Mi Vida"
*Students are assessed using the Presentational Rubric
