The Video Game Industry

The video game industry is entering a new era, an era where technology and creativity will fuse to produce some of the most stunning entertainment of the 21st Century. Decades from now, cultural historians will look back at this time and say it is when the definition of entertainment changed forever.

 

As you look into the future, where do you see yourself ten years from now? What preparation must happen for you to achieve this goal? Will your career choice support the lifestyle you seek? These and many other questions must be answered before you can make reasonable, intelligent choices regarding your future in the Video Game Industry.

 

Assignment 1 - Job Analysis

You will choose one of the sixteen jobs in the Video Gaming Industry (listed by teacher). Students will research their job choice and prepare a PowerPoint presentation citing job:

  • Requirements
    • Education
    • Experience
  • Expected job demand (prospects of finding employment) -- will you be able to find a job?
  • Pay
  • Location -- where will you live for this job?
  • Job Description -- what will you do at work?

Assignment 2 - Company Comparisons

There are more than 60 video game companies with locations in Austin. You wish to work in Austin. As you begin your job search you must do your homework. In an effort to find an established, stable company for which to work you need to know certain things about potential employers before you decide if you want to work for them.

 

Using the “job” you researched, gather pertinent information on three Austin companies who employ people in this position (one page or less/company). You must include:

  • Brief Company History
  • Financial Information including (use link to Yahoo Financial Page below in "Links"):

    • Last Trade
    • 52 Week Range
    • Average Volume
    • P/E
    • EPS -- Earnings Per Share
    • Div & Yield
  • Products
            Past
            Current
            Future

Assignment 3 - Location Comparisons

As an adjunct to the research and discussions of industry job opportunities, identify companies that are currently hiring for the position you researched. This research will be conducted as if  you are searching for employment.

Your job search will include one employer in the Austin area and two non-Texas employers. Your search may include the United States, North America, the world.

Students will:

1) prepare a matrix showing information about each job offering (example in "Attachments" below)

2) using Word, write a one page paper explaining why you made the decision to take the job.

All sources on ALL assigments must be documented.
