Educational Technology Perspectives

Four Perspectives
  • Perspective 1: Media and AV- Began in the 1930s when it was believed that students could retain information through medias of slides and films  better than they could while listening to lectures or reading textbooks. AV is known for being the "branch of educational theory and practice concerned primarily with the design and use of messages that control the learning processes."
  • Perspective 2: Instructional Systems/ID- Began after World War II with the "belief that both human (teachers) and non-human (media) resources could be part of an efficient system for addressing any instructional need."
  • Perspective 3: Vocational Training- Began in the 1980s when it was believed the goal of school was to prepare students for working with technology in their future and "that vocational training can be a practical means of teaching all content areas, such as math, science, and language."
  • Perspective 4: Computer Systems- Began in the 1950s as computers were beginning to be seen differently for the various uses it had. Decades later, educators came to see how computers tied together with the other perspectives.
