Standard 16

Rationale

 

Context:

 

The Professional Development Standard 16 was created at Appalachian State University under the advisement of Richard Blackburn, Ashe County Student Teacher supervisor and under the advisement of Theresa H. Church, a sixth grade teacher at Mountain View Elementary School in Ashe County, North Carolina.  I completed the unit as a requirement for CI-4900, Student Teaching.

 

The Professional Development Standard 16 is an elaboration of how I have met majority of NCDPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standard16: Elementary teachers develop as leaders in their schools and communities by staying informed about educational policy issues and supporting professional development.  Elementary teachers participate in co-curricular activities, provide leadership in student and curriculum involvement, and connect these activities to the development of citizenship ideals in their students.  The indicators have a belief description of how I have worked on my professional development during student teaching.

 

Impact:

 

The Professional Development Standard 16 is beneficial to students because it demonstrates how I have grown as an elementary education teacher during my Student Teaching experience at Mountain View Elementary School.  Throughout Student Teaching, I have had the opportunity to conduct parent-teacher conferences, manage field trips, and collaborate with teachers to enhance student learning. I am able to conduct professional conferences with my students’ parents to elaborate on individual needs and improvements throughout the school year.  I also understand how to create the vital relationship between the community and school.
