Child Abuse a Teacher’s Role

Presentation Rationale

Context:

The Child Abuse a Teacher’s Role presentation can be used to inform primary and secondary school teachers about the three types of child abuse and child neglect. The presentation was created at Appalachian State University under the advisement of Bill Peacock, Appalachian State University instructor. I completed this assignment as a requirement for FND 3800, Foundations of American Education.

The presentation examines the North Carolina Law on Child Abuse in regards to primary and secondary school teachers. North Carolina’s law is commonly called “the child abuse reporting law”. The Child Abuse Power Point presentation includes North Carolina statistics for each type of child abuse and neglect. It also provides characteristics and procedures of reporting physical, emotional, sexual abuse, and neglect. The Power Point concludes with child abuse and neglect scenarios in which, teachers identify the type of child abuse or neglect.

Impact:

The Child Abuse a Teacher’s Role presentation can be used to introduce teachers to the three types of child abuse and neglect. Schools are among the most common reporters of child neglect or abuse due to their knowledge of responsibilities of the reporting duty. Teachers encounter their students ten months out of a year and have the responsibility to keep their students safe, and unharmed.

Through the Child Abuse a Teacher’s Role presentation, teachers will learn and be able to recognize the warning signs of child abuse or neglect. Educational Personnel reported 20, 939 child abuse cases in the year 2004, making Educational Personnel the leading reporters of abuse and neglect. Teachers also examine the types of abuse, learning the definition and characteristics of each type of child abuse. The Power Point explains the procedure and information needed to report child abuse or neglect. The Child Abuse a Teacher’s Role presentation will help teachers protect their students from child abuse and neglect.
