Collaborative Skills & Professional Behaviors

Demonstrate an Ability to Use Collaborative Skills

that enhance and support productive community partnerships

Fundamental Skills of Basketball: KINS 1583 Foundations of Assessment Spring 2007

Foundations of Assessment was an introductory course to kinesiology. In this class techniques for assessing the fundamental motor skills and physical activity of all age groups were acquired.

The artifact in this section is a lesson plan for students to learn the fundamental skills of basketball. The lesson involved separating the class into four groups to perform stations such as dribbling, passing, catching, and shooting. After a criterion at each station was met, a basketball game incorporating each station was performed to test the fundamental skills of each individual.

This artifact was a group project but I feel it demonstrates my ability to use collaborative skills with my peers. Each section of the assignment was performed by a different group member, and each station was presented by that individual. Every individual in this assignment communicated with one another to produce effective results.

I learned the many skills of basketball with this assignment as well as how to collaborate with my peers to formulate an effective lesson plan. This was my first group assignment as a student at Texas Woman’s University, and it was a great way to establish trustworthy working relationships for future group projects. This artifact will remind me of the importance of appropriate collaboration in the field of Physical Therapy. I plan on working with other professionals, and it is crucial to understand the concept of effective collaboration. I also feel that by creating fundamentals to basketball will help me understand the importance of fundamentals to any activity.

Skinfold Calipers: Which Caliper's Pinch Makes You Lose an Inch?: KINS 4593 Measurements and Evaluations Fall 2008

Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education is a course that implements evaluation procedures used by researchers in the field of kinesiology. With this course the creation and construction of a research hypothesis as well as the administration of tests became a firsthand experience. Statistical analysis to interpret research results was also a major aspect of Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education.

This artifact is a written report of a research project that was conducted for the Kinesiology Fall Research Symposium held in November of 2008. This project was a group project; on top of recruiting and performing skinfold measurements on 15 participants I was responsible for writing the abstract, introduction, calculating the results, writing the results section, and collecting all information to create the paper. As a group member I also played a major role in creating the poster for the presentation. The purpose of this project was to determine if there was a significant difference in the predicted percent body fat of three different skinfold calipers.

The artifact meets the competency to use collaborative skills. This report demonstrates my ability to communicate effectively and work as a team to successfuly compile all necessary information for the final product; the paper clearly represents the research, methodology, results, and discussion of our project. As a group we were able to combine our efforts to produce the report as well as distinguish between important and necessary information.

I learned how to formulate a research project from start to finish with this artifact. I also learned how to apply and perform appropriate statistical analysis on the data collected. This was an interesting research project because it allowed for me to actually have hands on experience and apply knowledge learned in the classroom. I feel that this artifact is applicable to the field of Physical Therapy because the ability to use collaboratice skill is a crucial aspect of working with other health care professionals.

Demonstrate Professional Behaviors

that enhance and support productive community partnerships

Internship Notebook: KINS 4933 Practicum in Exercise Science Summer 2009

Practicum in Exercise Science was an internship designed for a student to gain hands experience in the community. With this internship communication skills, initiative, and professional behaviors were just as important as physical skills such as identifying arrhythmias, taking blood pressures and heart rate measurements. This class was designed to give students an experience outside of the classroom and to test their knowledge of exercise science.

This artifact is a sample of a daily log tracking my experience at Gwinnett Medical Center Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center. This log gives a day to day recap of my activities at the rehab center. I have also included a list of the objectives and goals that my internship supervisor and I created to enhance my experience. A progress report is also included to document how I have reached my goals and how I plan to achieve the remaining goals. I chose to include this artifact because it demonstrates the skills that I have acquired during my experience in the health care profession.

These documents demonstrate professional behaviors that enhance and support productive community partnerships. This internship required proficient and expert communication and skills to produce the necessary results for the patients.
I will be able to transfer and adopt the communication skills and health care experience that I learned from this internship into the field of physical therapy. I feel that cardiac rehab and physical therapy are incredibly comparable. I believe the patient interaction and education aspect of cardiac rehab is parallel to that of physical therapy; with this experience I hope to be more prepared for the future.

Lab Project: KINS 4701 Exercise Test and Prescription Laboratory Spring 2009

Exercise Test and Prescription is a class designed to examine risk stratification, the physiological adaptation responses to activity or exercise, exercise testing, and the methods behind healthy exercise prescription for all populations.

This artifact is a written report covering a fitness assessment and exercise prescription. This artifact involved testing health-related fitness components and creating an exercise prescription for an individual. I chose to include this artifact in my portfolio because it illustrates my ability to perform a pre- and post- fitness assessment and to successfully create an exercise program to improve the health, well-being, and fitness of an individual.

This report demonstrates my ability to express professional behaviors that enhance and support productive community roles. With this artifact I am able to show my potential in creating exercise prescriptions to improve the health of individuals in the community.

Exercise prescription will be a significant part of my career in physical therapy. With each patient an exercise prescription will be created based on the program necessary for rehabilitation purposes. This class and artifact strengthened knowledge on exercise testing and prescription.
