My Professional Philosophy
Philosophy can be described as a quest for truth through logical reasoning rather than factual observation. Beliefs, values and attitude all shape ones philosophy on life. Each and every person can have a different philosophy, yet no one philosophy is wrong. Philosophy can be categorized into idealism, realism, pragmatism, naturalism, and existentialism. With this paper I am going to attempt to explain my philosophy on life.
I believe that the individual has the right to fulfill their dreams. I believe that it is the most important aspect of life and self-development. I believe that the body is important for physical activity, yet it is a separate and independent from the mind. I believe the mind is superior to the body and can have a huge impact on how the body functions and learns. I believe in dualism; the idea that the mind and body are separate entities. I believe that the source of truth comes from learning from personal experiences. Therefore, I believe that reality stems from individual’s life experiences.
My above personal beliefs cannot be pin pointed as a single philosophy. My beliefs are skewed across the board ranging from idealism to existentialism. There are times when I feel that that reality is based on existentialism, while other times it could be based on pragmatism. I feel that one learns from their own personal experiences, but science also plays a major role. This would be an example of pragmatism versus realism. My beliefs fall under realism when it comes to teaching methods, yet typically I do not feel that science reveals all truth. In regards to idealism, I feel that the mind interprets events, but I do not consider truth to be universal. My naturalist side shines through because I expect the individual to be more important that society, yet I do not feel that the individual is above all other factors. My beliefs stem from all directions, which could be an advantage or a disadvantage. I feel I am able to relate to most individuals because of my eclectic philosophy. But it could also result in personal conflicting views. As an eclectic my philosophy is affected in many ways regarding education and in professional fields.
I believe that the mission of education in a democratic society is to educate all willing students equally. I feel that education is a combination of the students working with the teachers to achieve the highest desired learning. I believe that teaching methods should use real-world drills and problem solving skills. With this the student will be able to prepare for real life situations.
I believe that the purpose of the teacher is to provide an orderly presentation of facts and drills. The more organized the teacher, the more organized the student will be able to be. I also believe that the teacher should be a motivator to the students. If the teacher is willing to teach and hold the student’s interest, the more willing the student will be to learn.
I believe that it is the student’s responsibility to have a readiness to learn. Without the willingness to absorb the information there is not much the teacher can do to help. Education is given by the teacher, but depends on the student to learn.
I believe that the public and private education should be very similar. The resources for private education tend to be more prevalent, yet that should not leave those in public education behind. Every student has the right to education, no matter his or her ethnicity, race, gender, socioeconomic background, or geographic location.
I believe values in education differ for specific students needs. I feel that each student has individuals goal’s in life can influence their educational values. The student’s upbringing and background can also influence their values in education. Personally, I value education and feel that it is a stepping-stone to success in life.
I believe that my profession is a profession that will require a significant amount of dedication and determination. With career goals of becoming an physical therapist, I believe that my career will be based around my realistic, problem solving views. Obviously with a career in healthcare, nature and its forces govern the physical world. I believe my profession in the year 2010 will still be improving with new technology. At that point in time I will still be in school, learning the necessary knowledge and techniques. I believe that I will be ethically professional. With a career in medicine there is much controversy surrounding confidentiality, and I believe that I will practice those methods.
My personal philosophy as an eclectic is in agreement with my professional philosophy. With a career in healthcare, realistic views are necessary, but in profession that communicates with patients, it is beneficial to possess a collection of qualities. Understanding the patients’ situation is critical to solving their problems. It is much like the teacher and the student scenario. My collection of views will allow me to communicate effectively with the patients, and in turn use my realistic beliefs to solve the problem.
My personal upbringing and family have brought me to my current philosophical orientation. My family and environment are the result of my beliefs today. Because no one view was pushed upon me, I ended up with a collection of beliefs. My eclectic philosophy is a collection of idealism, realism, pragmatism, naturalism, and existentialism. All traditional philosophies have shaped who I have become.
