Behavior Management: KINS 2622 Adapted Physical Education Fall 2008
Adapted Physical Education was a class aimed at preparing myself and others for fields and life situations involving individuals with disabilities. This class was important for learning several types of disabilities, the contraindication for those disabilities, and even teaching tips for individuals with disabilities. In this class we even had the opportunity to interact with several hearing impaired and visually impaired students; one I call a rewarding experience.
To represent this class I included my Behavior Management project and reflection. This project was aimed at improving an unwanted behavior with the use of the antecedent and intervention method. This artifact meets the competency to demonstrate in-depth knowledge by my ability to actively implement teaching techniques discussed in Adapted Physical Education class.
With this project I learned different techniques in behavior intervention. I also learned and experienced the process of data collection and interpretation. With goals of becoming a Physical Therapist this assignment will be helpful when evaluating patients and implementing an exercise program. I will be able to use different teaching methods and behavior intervention methods.
The Musculoskeletal Effects of Obesity on Children: KINS 3592 Kinesiology and Biomechanics Fall 2008
Kinesiology and Biomechanics involves the scientific study of movement. In this class the analysis of fundamental movements and mechanical principles were applied to human motion. Biomechanics involved the kinetics and kinematics of human motion.
This artifact is a research paper written over the musculoskeletal effects of obesity on different areas of the body in children. This was a group project and I was responsible for researching and producing the sections outlining the effects of obesity on the knee and foot structures as well as imputing appropriate figures for the paper. I chose to include this artifact because I played a key role in selecting the topic but also because it demonstrates my ability to write critically but it also demonstrates my ability to collaborate with fellow classmates to produce meaningful results.
The paper demonstrates the ability to think and write critically because a topic and key areas of the body were chosen to be researched and discussed based on a broad topic: obesity. Little research has been done on the musculoskeletal effects of obesity on children and because of this, to produce significant results critical thinking was required.
In researching this topic I learned the many harmful effects of obesity on the musculoskeletal form of children. Over the course of time the forces and changes the body experiences can only lead to greater problems as obese adults. In the realm of Physical Therapy, children suffering from obesity will be encountered. I will be able to use this research to hopefully educate my patients and improve their quality of life.
Hypertension Resource Manual: KINS 4602 Advanced Exercise Physiology Fall 2008
Advanced Exercise Physiology was not only a class that provided in-depth knowledge in the interpretation of Electrocardiograms (ECGs) but it was also necessary for learning the tools in preparation of an internship in cardiac rehabilitation.
The Hypertension Resource Manual is an artifact that is geared at providing background information, causes, sign and symptoms, exercise testing and prescription, medications, contraindications to exercise, and effects of training on hypertensive individuals. This assignment was a group project; I was responsible for the section on Antihypertensive Drugs, and the Effects of Training. I was designated by my group members as the project manager; it was my job to collect the required information from the group members, format the contents and finalize the paper in APA format.
This artifact meets the competency for illustrating in-depth knowledge because this resource manual provides a thorough explanation of hypertension. I learned a board base of causes, signs and symptoms, recommendations for exercise, and contraindications of exercise in individuals with hypertension that I did not know before. With this manual I can take this information into the field of Physical Therapy and apply this knowledge to hypertensive patients that I may encounter.
Motivation Research Article Summary: KINS 4573 Motor Learning and Development Fall 2008
Motor Learning was a class designed to cover the concepts of motor behavior from infancy to adulthood. In this class we assessed the effects of personality traits, generic, and environmental factors on learning motor skills.
This artifact is a summary of a research article based on motivation. This article meets the competency of demonstrating skill by my ability to use the resources available to locate a research article on motivation. I also demonstrate skill with this artifact by taking an original piece of work and summarizing it.
The components of motivation will be necessary in furthering an education as well as a career in Physical Therapy. With this article I was able to see the tangible effects of motivation.
Motor Development Lesson Plan: KINS 1583 Foundations of Assessment Spring 2007
Foundations of Assessment was an introductory course to kinesiology. In this class techniques for assessing the fundamental motor skills and physical activity of all age groups were acquired.
The artifact is a lesson plan designed for a student at Ann Windle School for Young Children. The goal of the lesson is to improve balancing skills through the use of four selected activities.
This artifact meets the competency to demonstrate skill by my ability to construct, implement, and reflect on a lesson plan created specifically for this child. With this lesson plan I demonstrate skill by creating an appropriate goal, selected activities to improve the goal, and determining the necessary teaching style for the lesson.
From this artifact I learned how to create measurable goals and lesson plans. Goals and exercise plans are an important part of Physical Therapy; I feel that my preparation with this class will help me succeed in constricting measurable goals and results as a Physical Therapist.
Individual Assessment TGMD-2: KINS 1583 Foundations of Assessment Spring 2007
Foundations of Assessment was an introductory course to kinesiology. In this class techniques for assessing the fundamental motor skills and physical activity of all age groups were acquired.
This is an artifact that illustrates my ability to fully assess gross motor development of a ten year old individual with the use of the Test of Gross Motor Development 2nd Edition (TGMD-2). I was able to evaluate his current gross motor development, make predictions about the future, and compare his motor development to equal aged peers.
With the use of the TGMD-2 I was able to meet the competency of demonstrating professional behaviors by performing the appropriate behaviors to necessary to produce results. TGMD-2 is an age appropriate standard assessment for determining motor development of an individual; with this assessment I demonstrate my ability to professionally complete assessments and perform an interview.
With this assignment I learned the necessary objectives of the TGMD-2 and other individual assessments. I not only learned how to professionally assess an individual, but I also learned how to interpret the results. This skill is necessary in the field of Physical Therapy because I will constantly be evaluating and assessing patients. I may not be assessing gross motor development, but I will be assessing individual’s abilities to perform gross motor task. I will be able to carry over my professional behavior from this assignment into patient care in Physical Therapy.
Super Market Visit: KINS 4573 Motor Learning and Development Fall 2008
Motor Learning was a class designed to cover the concepts of motor behavior from infancy to adulthood. In this class we assessed the effects of personality traits, generic, and environmental factors on learning motor skills.
This artifact represents an assignment designed to produce professional communication skills. We were asked to visit a local super market and answer a series of questions, some of which involved attention to detail and speaking with the manger, and determine the motivation behind the arrangement of the store.
This artifact meets the competency of demonstrating professional behavior because it represents my ability to interview employees of a local supermarket, represent my university in the community, and actively pay attention to detail and motivation of the store.
From this assignment I learned that motivation is present in all aspects of society, even organization of super markets. I also overcame my fear and nervousness of speaking with individuals I do not know by asking employees and customers questions pertaining to this assignment. A visit to the super market will be useful in the future of Physical Therapy by aiding me in looking for sources of motivation in unexpected places.
