Reflection:
Bolman and Deal propose four organizational frames that include organizational structure, human resources, organizational politics, and organizations as cultures. While I see aspects of all of these within Athletico’s organization the most prominent one to me is organizational structure. Organizational structure includes the division of responsibilities and which is vital for operations running smooth at the clinic because each position is so interdependent on others. While each role, therapist, rehabilitation aide, and office coordinator have their specific tasks, it is essential that we all work together and are willing to share some responsibilities. If an office coordinator does not verify the patient’s insurance or receive authorization, the therapist cannot treat the patient and the aide cannot assist in the treatment. Many of our responsibilities trickle into each other’s jurisdiction, so organizational structure is especially important. According to Warrick, organizational culture is the set of beliefs, values, and goals of the organization or group of employees as a whole. Going along with this definition, I think the organizational culture of Athletico is that of teamwork in the name of patient care. Everything that we strive to do is so that we can get the patient back to their best self. Healing is our main purpose. Our job is to identify what healing means to each specific patient and do everything we can to help them reach their rehabilitative goals. Healing may mean being able to run for one patient, while for another patient it may simply mean maneuvering around their house safely. Not each patient will present the same or have the same end goals, however the level of respect and dignity we treat each patient with does not waver.
I do believe that Athletico has a strong tie with the community. We are constantly involved in local events such as Wild Cat Alley, in which we set up a table and provide free stretching and simple demonstrations to children at sporting events. I recently participated in Healthy Kids Day at the Evanston YMCA and we also regularly reach out to physicians in the area to establish relationships with local doctors. I do think Athletico would agree with Davis to an extent. I agree that the service we provide does in return benefit Athletico because we get exposure within the community that may stimulate more business. However, I do not think Athletico can directly relate to Davis’ point that by serving others you are implying superiority over them simply because of the purpose of Athletico. Our mission is to provide rehabilitative care, our sole job is to provide a service to patients.

Last semester I took my final, bioethics capstone class. It was important because it caused me to reflect on my own view of death. I included an image of my final research poster presentation that focused on green burial techniques. I analyzed traditional vs. green techniques and considered the ethical ramifications of each. This project showed me how meaningful reflection can be, although it may be uncomfortable with topics such as death, it is imperative to take the time to decide what is best for you and see how your decisions ultimately affect the community around you.
