My goal as a teacher-librarian is to help students extend their knowledge base by capitalizing on their natural curiosity. I believe in "meeting children where they are" developmentally, socially and academically. I am a firm believer in providing enriching educational experiences that honor differences in learning styles, encourage questioning and challenge students to take intellectual risks to form new competencies. In addition, I believe in culling resources from the students' cultural and social backgrounds as well as their interests to create a learning environment/community in which students feel respected and "heard". I believe that "teachable moments" exist in every interaction (formal and informal) with students and can be used to teach the skills students will need to become "informed citizens who think critically and solve problems" and "observe rights and responsibilities relating to the generation and flow of information and ideas" (AASL Position Statement on the Role of the School Library Media Program).
As a teacher-librarian I plan to provide support to the teachers and students I serve by building and maintaining a library collection that is rich in materials that support the curriculum as well as build upon students’ intellectual, recreational and cultural interests. I believe that libraries are natural hubs for inquisitive exploration and teacher-librarians play a critical role in the development of life-long learners. I believe that collaboration is a necessary component to creating a community of active learners and plan to work diligently towards building relationships with teachers to ensure students develop the skills needed to become information literate and thrive in an information-rich society .
