Saving the World One Student at a Time
My responsibility as a teacher is not only to educate my students, but also to serve as a role model to them. Throughout my years as a student, I have encountered numerous teachers that have served as role models to me. They captivated everything that I want to be, as both a person and as a teacher. I hope to be a role model to my students because I think it is extremely crucial for teachers to set positive examples. School is like a second home to students, and just as students need a positive influence at home, they need it in their second home. Students surrounded by good examples grow up to be productive men and women prepared to make a difference in the world. In order to set a good example, I will always be considerate and caring towards others in and out of the presence of my students. I will leave my personal life at home and will always be optimistic. I will be ready to teach those who are willing to learn and I will be ready to motivate those who are not. My role as a teacher is both leader and a mentor. As their teacher, I will teach them everything I possibly can. As their mentor, I will guide them. Their struggles will be my struggles, their goals will be my goals and if they fail, I fail. It means everything in the world to me that my students be successful.
It will be my top priority as a teacher to create a positive learning environment for my students, because I believe that students cannot perform at their very best if they are not comfortable physically, emotionally, and mentally in a classroom. In order to create this positive environment, I will arrange my classroom in a way that allows all students access to me so that they can always come to me with their questions and concerns. I will continuously re-arrange the desks in my classroom so that my students have the opportunity to interact with every one of their classmates, in this way, creating a very comfortable setting with no room for students to feel left out and unimportant. I also plan to decorate my classroom in an inviting manner so that my students feel invited and at ease. I plan to display all my students’ best work on my walls so that they feel proud and motivated. It will also be a top priority to praise and encourage my students often. I will always being aware of their achievements. When my students do well on tests, quizzes, or projects, I will inform their parents so that they not only receive recognition and praise from me, but also from their family. In order to create a mentally comfortable environment for my students, I will always be sure that my students understand what I am teaching by stopping frequently in my lessons to make sure everyone is following. I strongly believe, that by building this type of environment in my classroom, my students will strive to succeed. Creating a sense of achievement and success in my students will be the biggest reward for me.
As a teacher, I plan to build strong and encouraging relationships with both my students and their parents. I will have a very open and honest relationship with my students. I will be there to help them in any possible way. It is also my strong belief that in order for my students to succeed, their parents should be involved. For that reason, I will be actively involved with the parens of my students. In unison with the parents, I will create a classroom outside the classroom for my students. I will always be accessible to parents and will always keep them up to date with their children’s achievements and struggles by means of phone calls, emails, or personal conferences. I will contact them often and allow them to voice their questions or comments. Parents and I will establish open communication so that there are never confusions or misunderstandings when it comes to my expectations of their children.
One of the most important skills a teacher can ever have is quality classroom management. As a teacher, I will let my students know that although I am there to assist them in any way possible, there are boundaries that they must keep in mind. I want them to feel at ease in my classroom, but if it interferes with other students’ learning, there is a problem. Because school should be an enjoyable time, if one of my students is acting in a way that does not help my positive learning environment, I will talk to them in a very encouraging manner and help them overcome their problem.
One of the most important things a teacher must keep in mind is that every child is unique. Therefore, I will be open to different learning styles. By incorporating every possible learning style and interest into my classroom, even if it is not my learning style or interest, I will teach my students to be passionate about their education. I will be aware of what my students are interested in so that I can incorporate those things into my lessons, thus making their education an interesting and engaging experience. If any of my students do not respond to my ways of teaching, I will make it my top priority to sit down with that student one-on-one and together try to find what will make them “tick.” For example, for the benefit of my kinesthetic learners, I could turn a basketball game into an exciting math lesson.
One of my top priorities as a teacher is to expose my students to technology by using it regularly in my classroom. In a world that relies so heavily on technology, I strongly believe that it is my obligation as an educator to encompass all aspects of it into my classroom. By using computers often, I will set the bar for technology in my class. As a teacher, I will send out e-newsletters regularly to inform parents about what is going on in the classroom. I will also set up a classroom website or portfolio, so that parents can visit it when they have questions or comments for me. I will communicate with parents via e-mail, giving them regular updates on their children’s progress. I will also expect my students to use computers often. I will use WebQuests regularly in my lessons, and will place an emphasis on on-line research so that my students become familiar and comfortable with the internet. I will introduce them to various programs, such as PowerPoint for example, so that they may use them often.
More than anything, I want each and every one of my students to be successful in life. I want to impact them in big ways. By creating a positive classroom environment, I will allow every one of my students to blossom. Because I will adjust to my students’ learning styles, they will maintain an interest and passion for the things I teach them. Because their parents and I will have an open relationship, there will be no room for failure in my classroom. My biggest hope is that every student who sits in a desk in my classroom, will be successful and ready to contribute every positive aspect of their life to a world that so desperately needs knowledge and unity. My well prepared students will be the world’s knight in shining armor.
