What Teachers Should Know About the "Model Minority" Stereotype
What if there was a stereotype so wonderful that it made others look at your culture as a fine example for other cultures to follow? What if people classified you as the most brilliant, successful culture they knew? In this paper, the “model minority” stereotype and the detrimental effects it has on its recipients is examined. The hidden realities of statistics are discussed, as well as the possible solutions teachers can implement in order to end the stereotype and provide a more successful experience for the Asian-American students in his or her classroom. These solutions include familiarizing with the culture of the Asian student, communicating effectively with the family of the student, and avoiding assumptions and high expectations.
