Brain-Compatible Learning

This particular rubric will allow Science students the opportunity to do projects/labs following previewed vocabulary, direct instruction in class, and pair-share time. Students will then be able to work in small groups using information learned in class to complete projects/labs independently. The students and teacher use the rubric to grade both the group activity and how the group worked as a team to accomplish the project or lab. The teacher will use the rubric to grade individual projects too.

Students will learn and practice while utilizing many different types of media Earth Systems and Patterns. Through videos the water cycle will come alive before their eyes. Students will have ample practice time both in class in drawing the different parts of the water cycle while also labeling it. They will review with online quizzes the aquifer and all 5 layers of the earth’s atmosphere. Student stations will allow students to describe basic ways energy can be created by the sun. Students will test their knowledge through a game called “Pay me” while practicing their knowledge of energy conservation. An online site allows students to create their own hurricane and see how winds change the rotation. Students will work in teams on computers tracking and marking coordinates on maps. They will write about the importance of being prepared for natural disasters and how they affect Floridians. Students will even work on learning why our ozone and protecting it is so important. They will learn basic information on skin cancer and how to protect themselves and others from harmful UV rays. Over a two day class period students will work in pairs as they learn why and how the atmosphere components are just right for inhabitation. They will keep online journals writing about what they learn and why. An Astroferret will be their guide in this fun, but educational site by NASA.
