My work straddles the visceral and unsteady line between real and surreal. By rendering my images in this in-between space, I seek to convey feelings of uncertainty and contemplation in my viewers, speaking to overall issues of coming-of-age, internal conflict, and self concept, as well as to visually represent the ephemerality of memory.
My work combines flat, graphic linework with the organic and gestural qualities of watercolor to further highlight the juxtaposition of my past and my present. Despite a personal fixation on bold and simple forms, I strive for subtlety of tone, rendering, and message.
By employing elements of collage and pastiche, I seek to physically illustrate the way memory works in isolation- showing only snapshots of specific moments, void of their larger context. These visual techniques also allow me to reference the salient aspects of my childhood that have made me who I am today.
