ELD Thematic Unit on Determination - EDEL 405

Unit Overview

I. Purpose:
Determination is the ability to focus on a goal, even when confronted with danger, fear, or other tough challenges. It is something that permeates across cultures, as a trait that is universally strived for, admired and respected. It is a quality that allows people, of all colors, shapes, and sizes, to make their dreams become a reality. It is also something that can be utilized to make the dreams of others come true.

It is my hope, that in showing English Language Learners how others have used determination to reach their goals, that they, too, will become determined to reach their full potential in life, and have a positive impact on the world.

Lastly, this statement, made by Eleanor Roosevelt, aptly sums up another important end product of determination – gaining strength in yourself through facing your fears. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, I lived through this…I can take the next thing that comes along…You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
