Conferences attended - workshops, professional development, etc.
Spring 2004 In the spring of 2004, I was invited to attend a language arts curriculum workshop and a two-part parent communication workshop at the Gooden School in Sierra Madre. At the time, I was working there as a specialized aide.
Language Arts Curriculum Workshop - 3/1/04 The workshop addressed the demands of a new language arts curriculum, integrating reading, language, and spelling under one program. The curriculum was broken down to address the diverse learning needs among students, from remedial, to class level, to accelerated.
Parent Communication Workshops - 4/30/04 & 5/14/04 In the parent communication workshops, the principal set up challenging scenarios teachers encounter, in working with parents. Faculty members paired up and then took turns playing the role of the parent and teacher, with regard to specific parent/teacher issues. All issues had been experienced by faculty members. Role playing was shared with the entire group, providing for open critique, support, and discussion.
It was an insightful experience, seeing what teachers deal with in working with parents. It also gave me some good tools to use in situations that can become heated if not treated properly - allowing for a cooling off period to transpire before reacting to heated parental complaints was highly recommended. Continual, open communication was also stressed.
March 2005 - Supporting Student Success: Focus on Learning Differences On March 7, 2005, I was invited to attend a workshop at the Gooden School on supporting students with learning difference. It was an excellent workshop, and affirmed what I had been learning on the subject in the teaching credential program at CSULA, both Fall Quarter 2004, and Winter Quarter 2005. Workshop handout coversheet is attached as evidence of attendance.
