Description:
This lesson will introduce plural nouns to students. The students will be able to recognize and define singular and plural nouns. The students will also be able to form plural nouns from singular nouns by adding -s, -es, -ies to the appropriate endings. The students will also be introduced to special plural nouns.
Objectives:
• Students will recall the definition of a noun.
• Students will distinguish between singular and plural nouns.
• Students will identify and form plural nouns by adding s, es, and ies.
• Students will identify and form the plural form of irregular nouns
Materials Needed:
• Promethean Active Board
• Textbooks
• Worksheet
• Pencils
Lesson:
Teacher will review the definition of a noun and discuss the definition of singular and plural nouns. After discussion, students will read objectives of the lesson stated on first slide of active board presentation. Students will open their text books to page 64 and read the definition of a singular noun and a plural noun. Using the active board, students will review the definition with teacher and see examples of each. They will then see a demo of how to identify singular and plural nouns through practice problems and will practice forming plural nouns as a class. Teacher will then introduce plural nouns that end with –es. Students will read the objectives of the lesson regarding these nouns on the active board. Students will turn to the page 66 to read the rules for adding -es to singular nouns to make them plural. Using the active board, students will review the rule and see 5 practice problems that will help them form these plural nouns on their own. Teacher will then introduce plural nouns that end with –ies. Students will read the objective of the lesson regarding these nouns that end with –ies. Students will turn to page 67 and read the rules for adding –ies to singular nouns to make them plural. Using the active board, students will review the rule and see 5 practice problems that will help them form these plural nouns on their own. Teacher will then introduce the special plural nouns. Students will read the objectives of the lesson regarding these nouns that are special and follow no rule. Students will turn to page 68 of their text book and read about these special nouns. Using the active board, students will review the rules regarding special nouns and make clear that there are no rules for them. Students will see 5 practice problems that will help them form these plural nouns on their own. Teacher will conclude the lesson with a review of the rules for changing singular nouns to plural. Teacher will show the last page of the active board which will summarize what they have learned. The chart will be displayed on the screen as a reference during the assessment.
Accomodations:
Teacher will walk around and check understanding and help those in need of extra assistance during independent work. Teacher will remind students to think of pictures in their minds and provide worksheets with pictures to those who need assistance.
Assessment:
Students will independently complete a plural noun packet that includes practice problems identifying singular and plural nouns, adding –s, -es, -ies to singular nouns and making irregular nouns plural. Independent worksheet will be handed out and completed by students to the best of their ability for the remainder of the lesson. Teacher will walk around to check understanding and correct worksheets. If completed early, students can work in teams or partners on a plural form crossword puzzle.
