Unit Title: Biography-Shared Reading

Objectives:
• Students will listen and develop fluency
• Students will find features of biographies within the text
• Students will comprehend and make inferences about characters and important events of the story
• Students will understand vocabulary used in the biography
• Students will summarize the story, organizing the information by beginning, middle, and end
State Standards NJCCCS:
3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4
Materials:
• The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles
• Reading Journals and packet
• Pencils
Anticipatory Set:
Students will recall the features of biographies found in mentor texts from previous reading and writing lessons. Students will recall previously read pages and share predictions with partners. Some students will share with the class.
Instructional Input:
Teacher will ask comprehension questions to refresh the story in the students’ minds. Teacher will read pages in The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles. Throughout the story, the teacher will ask comprehension questions and have students define vocabulary. Teacher will encourage students to figure out the meaning of the words using context clues. When the selected pages are completed, the teacher will ask students to write responses to a series of questions in their reading journals. The students will share their answers with their biography partner previously selected in writing lessons.
Modeling:
Before the students start writing their responses in their writing journals, the teacher will verbally model expectations for responses to questions.
Checking for Understanding:
Teacher will check for understanding and comprehension through class discussion and posing questions. The teacher will also be checking the written responses of the students.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice:
Students will independently write responses to questions and make a prediction about the next part of the story. The students will share their answers with their biography partners and some volunteers will share their answers with the class.
Closure:
Teacher will review the objectives of the lesson. Students will recall the features of this book and important events from the story. The teacher will let the students know that they will be finishing the story the next day and will be summarizing the ending of the story.
Accommodations/Adaptations:
Teacher will conference individually with students in need of extra assistance. Teacher will suggest a starter sentence for those having trouble. Teacher will suggest that students go back to their book and use the pictures to help them answer some of the questions.
