Context:
This assignment was completed during my internship at Westwood Elementary in West Jefferson, NC during the fall of 2007 under the instruction of Dr. James Bryant. This service learning project was intended to complete the last part of the 20/20 community service requirement. The students in my third grade class wrote letters to soldiers in Iraq. Their letters thanked them for their hard work and dedication to the United States and they also asked some questions that had about the war and what life was like as a soldier. An after school staff person had been sending packages overseas and she sent their letters in a package to Iraq.
Impact:
This assignment helped students further understand letter writing and reaching out to people that are serving our country. Students were also able to see where the country Iraq is located using Google Earth.
Alignment:
I met standard 4 indicator 11 by creating a lesson plan that honors soldiers in Iraq through letter writing.
I met standard 4 indicator 6 by using Google Earth to show where Iraq is found on a satilitte and discussing political issues surrounding the war.
I met standard 16 indicator 1 by creating a project that promotes students to become involved with activities and issues outside of school.
I met NCDPI standard 16 indicator 7 by providing an activity that makes myself and my students aware of the issues that accompany the war and participating in a civic act to support soldiers.
