I participated in an interview with Mrs. G. She provided me with further insight into the field of education. I learned more about teaching and her learning theories. I hope by reading her responses below you can understand more about the role of an educator.
Be loving, but firm. You must be in control, but the students need to know you like them, and that you like being there. Having a positive attitude is so important. Also, be consistent and fair in every aspect of teaching: the punishments, calling upon students, grading, etc.
All students learn differently. One of the greatest challenges is to try to appeal to all types of learners. Most students respond to positive reinforcement and they will do anything for you if they know you like them.
Our curriculum has recently undergone many transitions to align to state standards. Frankly, I do not believe the people who wrote the state standards know anything about teaching or about students or about the curriculum. I think it needs some help.
We plan as a level - the teachers who teach the same level get together and plan the yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily curriculum that will meet the state standards. All teachers have input and then each teacher individualizes the lesson to her own personality and style. We try to stay together and plan every week together.
Motivation is a barrier. Students who are not motivated and not encouraged at home usually do not do as well in school. Parents who do not allow students to receive consequences for behaviors are also a barrier. Parents have a difficult time admitting their children are wrong or lazy. Extracurricular activities take up too much class time as well. Students missing class are a problem too.
I love teaching. It is very hard work, harder than I imagined. Only teach if you love the students.
