Resource Manual for Physically Challenged

This resource manual is designed for those with hearing, visual, and mobility impairments.  It is important to be comfortable using the computer by having access to features that are tailored to your individual needs.  One way to accomplish this is by using the Accessibility Wizard.  This helps you configure Windows to your specific vision, mobility, and hearing needs.  However, below you will find instructions on how to improve or change certain features of your computer manually.  To use the information below, find your impairment, locate the feature you want, and follow the instructions to set it.     

<font color=purple>Hearing Impaired

  • Onscreen visual
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Sound tab
    • Check the box called Sound Sentry
      • Visual warning when system makes sound
    • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • Onscreen caption
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Sound tab
    • Check the box called Show Sounds
      • Programs will display captions for sounds
    • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window

<font color=purple>Mobility Impaired

  • Numeric keypad
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Mouse tab
    • Check the box called Mouse Keys
      • Allows user to control the pointer with numeric keypad
      • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window

  • Sticky keys
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Keyboard tab
    • Check the box called Sticky Keys
      • Prevents user from holding down two keys at once
    • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • On-screen keyboard
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • On the left, click the On-Screen Keyboard icon
      • Keyboard appears automatically in new window
  • Filter keys
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Keyboard tab
    • Check the box called Filter keys
      • Ignores brief or repeated key stroke
      • Slows repeat rate
    • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • Customized mouse for left-handers
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Printers and Other Hardware icon
    • Click Mouse icon
    • Click the Buttons tab
    • Check the box called Switch primary and secondary buttons
      • Button on the right used for primary functions

<font color=purple>Visually Impaired

  • Large mouse pointers
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Printers and Other Hardware icon
    • Click Mouse icon
    • Click Pointers tab
    • Use drop down arrow to locate the scheme: Windows Standard (Extra Large)
    • Click Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • Show pointer location
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Printers and Other Hardware icon
    • Click Mouse icon
    • Click Pointer Options tab
    • Check the box called Show location of pointer when I press the CRTL key
      • Makes pointer more visible
    • Click Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • Narrator
    • Click the Start button
    • Point to All Programs
    • Point to Accessories
    • Point to Accessibility
    • Click Narrator
      • New window pops up
    • Choose your specific settings
  • Magnifier
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • On the left, click the Magnifier icon
      • Window appears
    • Choose your specific settings
      • Magnification Level
        • 2 is the default
        • 9 is the highest level
      • Tracking and presentation
        • Check the boxes for the options you want

  • High Contrast
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Accessibility Options icon
    • Click Display tab
    • Check the box called High Contrast
      • Font and color changed for easy reading
    • Click the Apply button on the bottom of the window
  • Larger Fonts
    • Click the Start button
    • Go to Control Panel
    • Click the Appearance and Themes icon
    • Click the Display icon
    • Click the Appearance tab
    • Use the drop down arrow to choose the desired font size
    • Click the Apply Button on the bottom of the window
