Standard: Standard 2: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.
Indicator: Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of geometry and measurement. Teachers:
Detail: Understand construction of simple geometric figures,
Detail: Understand and apply concepts of relative position and relationships and geometric formulas, and
Detail: Model appropriate measurement systems in various settings (standard, nonstandard, and metric system) in measuring length, perimeter, area, capacity, volume, weight, angle, time, money, and temperature.

Rationale for DPI for Math Excel Lesson 30:

Context:

During my student teaching in a fourth grade classroom at Pleasant Gardens Elementary, I modeled a symmetry and measurement lesson.  I was observed by my field advisor and used the lesson to create a hands-on experience for a group of fifteen students.

Impact:

The lesson ensured that the students could use various meauring devices accurately, as well as deciphering symmetrical from non-symmetrical shapes.  The students were able to use two-dimensional die cut shapes in which they could fold and manipulate to see in what ways they were symmetrical.  The students were also able to visualize that some objects are not symmetrical, while some have many or unlimited lines of symmetry.  The students did an exemplary job with the lesson and its activities.  They were able to integrate art into math by using construction paper to create bilateral symmetry with paint.  They folded the paper in half and smeared the paint across it in order to create a unique shape, as well as bilateral symmetry.

Alignment:

I have met DPI standard 2, indicator 2 because the math lesson helps students understand symmetry and how to use various measuring devices correctly.  It relates symmetry to various geometric figures, such as circle, rectangle, square, rhombus, trapezoid, and triangle.  It also allows students to apply concepts in which they have learned relating to the geometrical figures.
