The three lesson plans were created to use during my block II internship in a third grade classroom at Mountain View Elementary School. I later wrote a reflection for the lesson that I taught.
Rationale for DPI for Three Social Studies Lesson Plans and Reflection:
Context-
I did the three social studies lesson plans during my Block II internship at Mountain View Elementary School in a third grade classroom. The lessons I created focused on American folktales, particularly Davy Crockett. They also focused on real American heroes, such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks, just to name a few. The students created a KWL chart in one of the lessons and used various children's literature to enhance their learning experience. Later, I reflected on the lesson that I taught the students by explaining what we did during the lesson and how the students responded to the lesson.
Impact-
The lesson went well for the most part. The students eagerly responded to the folktale using the terms fact and fiction. They were well behaved and did very well with the liberty I gave them in choosing different children's literature to compare and contrast to their textbooks stories on Davy Crockett. They showed that they had gained a great deal from this lesson as we wrapped up the KWL chart we had started at the beginning.
Alignment-
I have met DPI standard 4, indicator 2 because I learned as the students learned throughout the lesson.
I have met DPI standard 4, indicator 3 because I created and taught lessons that revolved around humans and the communities they lived in.
I have met DPI standard 4, indicator 4 because I created lessons that used children's literature that was free from racist or sexist bias.
I have met DPI standard 4, indicator 6 because the folktale lesson used map skills in following the path of the folktale hero. Also, the lessons addressed the five themes of geography and six essential elements of geography, as well as environmental issues.
I have met DPI standard 4, indicator 8 because the lessons use concepts from cause and effect, chronology, continuity and change, North Carolina heroes, and United States history.
I have met standard 4, indicator 10 because we discuss the people in the lessons and how they affected their communities or what they contributed to society.
I have met standard 4, indicator 12 because we discuss past and present perspectives that relate to history.
I have met standard 4, indicator 14 because the lessons require that students use critical thinking to comprehend the readings, as well as using maps for geography purposes.
I have met standard 4, indicator 15 because the lessons develop spatial awareness of humans and physical aspects. Also, the students can build understanding of people, ideas, and resources.
