Rationale for DPI for Photo Essay activity:
Context-
In my science class during Block II, I created an activity called "Science Around Us" to use with students in my classes. I have attached the PowerPoint presentation that I made.
In this activity, I learned how to use a digital camera, download pictures to a computer, and put them into PowerPoint. I also learned how to compress a PowerPoint presentation to take up as little space as needed. The PowerPoint presentation represents many of the different questions we may have about science.
Impact-
When I teach, I can use this activity to integrate technology and science.
I might also have students come up with their own "Science Around Us" questions and create a PowerPoint presentation with the use of digital cameras and computers. They could do this individually or within groups.
If I use this activity with diverse groups, I would assign underrepresented students to lead the groups. I would also encourage them to use any resources that they could find in the community. The science questions should be based on the communities, or real-world in which we live.
It will hopefully engage students more than a typical writing assignment.
Alignment-
I have met DPI standard 10 because the activity involves asking questions and allowing students to come up with questions related to science. It also allows for the teacher to develop science processing skills.
I have met DPI standard 15, indicator 1 because I encourage students to engage in the schooling process of science by using a different type of strategy that uses community resources, underrepresented groups of students, real-world applications that are interesting for all students, and underrepresented groups could lead their groups.
