My dissertation, “Enshrining Memory,” explores Catholic memory at five shrines dedicated to American saints. I argue that each shrine acts as the center of formal Church memory which both shapes the visitors’ experiences but is simultaneously acted upon through their engagement with the site. Furthermore, these sites demonstrate how Catholics understand their history, how they understand their national identity, and how they translate these concepts for non-Catholic audiences.This incorporates my interest in the display and interpretation of American religious history. In the past, my research explored Catholic-Presbyterian relations in the Ohio Valley region.
