Faculty Vision of our Secondary Teacher Candidates

As faculty in the Secondary Education program we are committed to graduating students from the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate program who:

  • are highly motivated, flexible, knowledgeable of content and pedagogy, and dedicated to providing an exemplary education for all K-12 students
  • are well prepared to present instructional content utilizing a variety of research-based strategies and best practice methods to a diverse student population
  • can assess and incorporate new technologies that are appropriate for student learning and engagement
  • can analyze and incorporate assessment data in formative and summative ways; assess prior knowledge as well as when re-teaching is necessary
  • possess the potential to develop into collegial, knowledgeable, teacher-leader professionals who have the ability to work collaboratively in teams to improve student achievement

Objectives:

In any secondary classroom and instructional setting (whole group or small group), the teacher candidate will:

  1. Apply theories of learning and development to (a) design instruction, (b) present instructional content, and (c) provide academic feedback aimed at increasing student learning;
  2. Align instruction to state content standards and gather evidence about student mastery;
  3. Design assessments and analyze assessment data to inform instructional decision-making aimed at increasing student learning;
  4. Use technology to support instructional design, teaching and assessment aimed at increasing student learning and communication with parents;
  5. Manage classroom behavior in a manner that supports student learning through engaged pedagogy;
  6. Implement a variety of subject-specific and literacy-based instructional strategies aimed at increasing student learning in the candidate’s identified content area;
  7. Display characteristics of collegial, knowledgeable, teacher-leader professionals who have the ability to work collaboratively in teams to improve student achievement; and
  8. Build student confidence and multicultural competence through pedagogy designed for special populations of learners including inclusion students, Gifted and Talented students, and English Language Learners.
