Context:

Using the curriculum from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for fourth grade Healthful Living I constructed a lesson about advertising. The lesson involved teaching the students about advertising techniques that are used to market products to children. The lessons also focused on finding these techniques and identifying if the claim made by the advertisers was a plausible gain from the product. This lesson was taught to my fourth grade class at my student teaching in Wake county.

Impact:

My students gained from this experience a basic knowledge of advertising techniques. They now know how to identify different techniques and judge the merit of the products claim. After this lesson they will also able to make healthy choice of food products based on their nutritional value and not the the advertising done for the product. Students are also able to work in cooperative groups and take roles within the groups.

Alignment:

I met NCDPI standard five indicator one by researching the basis of advertising for children's products and enabling my students to understand advertising so that they may look beyond marketing ploys and at nutritional value of products.

I met NCDPI standard five indicator two by researching childhood health problems and concentrating on childhood obesity for this lesson.

I met NCDPI standard thirteen by consulting with the healthful living teacher at my school about childhood health problems and creating an opportunity for students to practice healthy choices that will contribute to long term healthy living.
