Service Learning Rationale
Context:
I completed a service learning project during block two as part of my CI 3110 course. The service learning project was conducted in a third grade class during my internship at Mountain View Elementary in Ashe County. My class along with two other held a canned food drive for the local Ashe County Hunger Coalition. The students of the classes brought in canned food over a two week period of time. The food that was collected between the tree classes was then delivered to the Ashe County hunger coalition.
Impact:
Completing this service learning project will benefit me later on I my own classroom by giving me a general knowledge of what it take to participate in a service learning project. I will be able to efficiently and effectively facilitate or participate in service learning projects in my future classroom and school. Having the knowledge makes me better prepared to help my future students understand the importance of service projects.
Alignment:
I met NCDPI standard sixteen indicator one by getting my students involved in activities that extended beyond the classroom and into their community.
I met NCDPI standard sixteen indicator seven by encouraging my students to participate I the canned food drive and making them aware of volunteer and civic organizations in their community.
