Andy Smith is the Director for Grand County (Moab) Emergency Medical Services. Andy leads a group of EMTs and Paramedics that respond to over 3,600 square miles of some of the most rugged and remote areas of Utah. This includes 2 National Parks, the Colorado and Green Rivers, hundreds of slot canyons, and over 7,000 miles of trails. Each year millions visit Moab to enjoy some of the most extreme outdoor recreation anywhere. His service area stretches from the Colorado River to the towering LaSal Mountains rising above 12,000 feet.
Andy has personally responded to hundreds of back country calls where climbers, canyoneers, bikers, jeepers, base jumpers, kayakers, white water rafters, and horseback riders have needed his team’s assistance. His area also includes 2 major highways which have some very horrific accidents that he has responded to and been the incident commander for.
Andy has also worked for years at the North Fork (Sundance) Fire Department where he has responded to many accidents on Mt. Timpanogos, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Provo River.
When not responding to calls or training, Andy enjoys spending time with his incredible wife and 2 amazing children.
Andy will share insight with us from all of the accidents he has seen that can help prevent us from making some of those same mistakes. We will learn from Andy things that will enable our youth to return safe from our high adventure trips.
