Toby Norton: Toby is a member of Utah County Search and Rescue where he currently serves as the Medical Team Leader. He is an Advanced EMT. He also serves the city of American Fork as a Firefighter / AEMT. Toby will share a variety of ideas regarding wilderness improvisation, including medical issues your group might face in the backcountry.
Marci Adams: Marci is a Biology Professor at BYU. She is also an Advanced EMT and serves as one of the medical team leaders of the Utah County Search and Rescue Team. Marci has been the Medic for several community events. Marci will share her expertise in Biology to help us learn what to do when we "Bites and Stings and run into Crawly Things".
Dr. Len Brunsdale: Dr. Brunsdale comes to this conference with two great skills to share with us. First, he is an Emergency Room Physician. He will share some medical hints on how to be better prepared to handle medical emergencies. Dr. Brunsdale is also known for taking his youth on some extreme high adventure type of activities. He will share how to get youth out doing very hard things...safely.
Chris Reed: No one has more Search and Rescue experience than Chris Reed. He is one of the founding members of Utah County Search and Rescue. Chris has thousands of documented SAR calls where he has played a key roll in saving lives. Chris is an Advanced EMT and has also served for decades, running thousands of calls, in Spanish Fork and Mapleton. Chris will be sharing some of his own techniques in splinting and bandaging injured patients using limited items from small first aid kits.
James Young: Jim is a seasoned Police Officer for BYU. He is also an educator / administrator where he is a Principal and has been a coach and athletic trainer. Jim will train you how to use a roll of tape to brace up injured ankles, knees, wrists, etc. that could save you a Search and Rescue call, or even a long carry out. Please plan on paying $1 for a roll of tape to cover Jim's cost. This will be a hands on course and class size will be limited.
Troy Smothers:Troy is a combat medic for the Air Force. He is the Training Officer for the Utah County Search and Rescue team. He is the owner of the EMT school, "My EMT Guy" where he has enjoyed very high passing rates of his students. One of Troy's specialities is assembling emergency kits for the backcountry. Troy will share with us suggested equipment to carry, both for our "car campouts", and also that lightweight kit for the 50 miler to King's Peak. He will provide an equipment list, where to purchase this equipment, and how to pack it.
McKay Vowles: McKay began his medical career serving as a Combat Medic for the Marines. He has served multiple tours of duty using his life-saving skills many times. He is a member of Utah County Search and Rescue where has served as the Medical Team Leader. McKay works in the University of Utah Burn Center and is an Advanced EMT. McKay will share some of his vast knowledge in how to treat soft tissue injuries such as lacerations, abrasions, punctures, burns, amputations, and even how to properly clean and close wounds.
Brian Hill: Dr. Hill is a professional canyoneer. He is a professor of recreation management at BYU. He leads mulitple expeditions, all over the world, to remote places with his college students. Brian is a member of the Utah County Search and Rescue. He is an Advanced EMT and also a Wilderness EMT.
Merrill Haas: Merrill is a certified CPR Instructor for the American Heart Association. He will provide an opportunity to RE-CERTIFY your Heartsaver certification. This course has a $5 fee to cover the cost of your card.
