Rationale for Science Demonstration
Context
During Block II, I was required to design and conduct a science demonstration for my CI 3543, Science Methods in the Elementary Classroom course. I was required to locate an engaging science demonstration that I could use as a route to ask students higher order scientific related questions. Afterward, I used the information found to plan and design a written document, using Microsoft Word, that other teachers could use as a tool for presenting the demonstration to their own students. Once I had adequately completed this document, I used it to present my demonstration to a group of children at Appalachian State University.
Impact
Through the use of this demonstration my students will be able to learn about the concept of viscosity by using Non-Newtonian fluids. My students will also be able to apply the demonstration to real life concepts through my discussion of how quicksand is related to the reaction of movement by the cornstarch substance.
Alignment
I met standard 3, indicator 2 by showing that I understand the characteristics of fluids. Through this demonstration, I can help my students to understand the concepts involved with Non-Newtonian fluids.
I met standard 15, indicator 1 by encouraging underrepresented groups to participate in the learning of science concepts and how they relate to the real world through the comparison of quicksand and the cornstarch substance.
