IRI Workshop Rationale

Context

As a requirement for the staff and student teachers at Mountain View Elementary School, I attended an after school workshop on the topic of Informal Reading Inventories (IRI).  One of Mountain View’s reading specialists, Holy McIntyre, presented this workshop.  The teachers use this inventory to assess students' reading levels after they have reached a level 20 on their other reading assessment program.  During this workshop, we were provided with an overview of the IRI.  This overview discussed the basic procedures involved with the implementation of an IRI.

In relation to the IRI workshop, Ms. McIntyre also visited my cooperating teacher to demonstrate how to properly conduct an Informal Reading Inventory with a student.

Impact

As a teacher, the information learned within the workshop and training will be very beneficial to my students.  Due to my knowledge on the IRI, I will be able to adequately conduct the inventories on my own students.  I will be able to place my students in the appropriate reading groups, which will result in more academic growth.

Alignment

I have met standard 16, indicator 2 because I attended the IRI workshop, which is based upon the school reading policy.

I have met standard 16, indicator 4 because the IRI requires the selection and use of leveled children's literature.

I have met standard 16, indicator 6 because Ms. McIntyre visited my cooperating teacher's classroom to demonstrate, observe, and discuss the methods and instructional delivery of the IRI.

I have met standard 16, indicator 8 because I learned how to apply the IRI within the elementary school setting and participated in the dissemination of and IRI.

I have met standard 16, indicator 9 because I have shown my understanding of the importance of collaborating with colleagues such as Ms. McIntyre to strengthen the content, research, and pedagogy of the IRI.
