Reflection on VCU Tour and Final Note

VCU TOUR

Driving through the streets of Richmond skyrockets my anxiety with constant distractions and noises. It is those moments that I question if I truly want to attend VCU. However, my tour of VCU’s campus with Pathways gave me a new perspective. While walking with my group around the campus, I realized how comforting it felt to be surrounded by fellow students in an area that felt like you drove into a side street neighborhood; where the birds are chirping and beautiful greenery peaks around historical buildings, providing a homey comfort. I felt a true sense of belonging and purpose when I was on campus. I had entered this communal space of creativity and optimism. Everywhere you looked there was someone to talk to, something to do, somewhere to grab a bite to eat or take a seat. I realized that I was in a space with people with similar objectives but possibly completely different backgrounds and stories. I found where I belong for the next two year and I could not be more excited.

FINAL NOTE

Joining the Pathways Program is single-handedly the best decision I have made within my two-years at John Tyler Community College. Pathways has given me an opportunity to connect with students and mentors that have made my transition to VCU not only easy but enjoyable. It is a refreshing feeling to simply not have to do it all alone. I am a first generation college student, which is the most rewarding challenge. My family and myself, cannot thank Pathways enough for giving me the guidance, support, and resources that they wish they were able to provide- and the experience I will now be able to pass on to my children one day.
