Stop 2: Patriots versus Loyalists

AR

Even though it seemed as if all Americans were supportive of the idea of independence from Great Britain, there was actually a divide between the American colonists over what was best.  The two groups of colonists were the Loyalists and the Patriots.  The Loyalists were those who wanted to remain loyal to Great Britain.  The following are some important points about them:
1. Loyalists changed sides throughout the war...Not so loyal, huh?
2. Strongest in the Carolinas and Georgia while weakest in New England
3. Remained loyal members of the Anglican church
4. Some depended on the British for jobs
5. Some feared the anarchy that would result from separation with Great Britain

On the other side were the Patriots who were those colonists who would fight Great Britain until the end!  The Patriots had the following advantages:
1. Fighting in their own territory
2. Determined to win
3. George Washington was their leader
4. Valued personal liberty and freedom
