Video Production

Context: I planned, shot and edited this video in Jeff Goodman's technology class during the 2005 fall semester.  I collaborated with Casey Thompson, Caroline Seufert and Amanda Birchum, three of my colleagues to create the final product.  We edited it using iMovie and presented it to our peers on the final day of class.

Impact: Media is a powerful teaching tool, so doing a project similar to this one with my class will be a fun, interesting teaching strategy.  My students can learn about cooperation, sequencing, technology and the media by shooting their own video and presenting it to the class.  This project is also ideal for multi-subject integration, aligning itself with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

Alignment: I have met the following standards:

  • NETS-T standard I-B because this project taught me to edit, a new technological skill, demonstrating my continual growth.  I was able to follow instructions and perform rather independently, demonstrating my competency with technology.

  • NETS-T standard II-D because my group and I managed the resources we were allocated fairly and thoughtfully.  We shared time on the computer, alternating between hands-on editing and an observant encourager.  We took turns shooting the camera, allowing us to each gain confidence in the piece of equipment.  We also planned our shots well, eliminating any unused time with the resources that were only available to us for a short time.

  • NETS-T standard VI-B because this activity can be used to appeal to a diverse group of learners.  The resources given to us can be adapted for all levels and styles of learners, empowering each individual and encouraging growth and confidence.  The technology involved in this project allows students to work fairly independently of the teacher, encouraging them to take ownership of their learning and construct the video in a way that makes sense to them.
