Context:
This assignment was created under the instruction of Jeff Goodman for GS 4401: Science and Science Technology in Elementary Schools in the Fall of 2007.
The purpose of the assignment was to have a reference of a nonfiction and fiction book that can be read to the class and then followed by a science activity correlating to the books.
Impact:
Through the reading of the two books, students will be introduced to both fiction and nonfiction literature on the subject of the life cycle of a caterpillar as it turns into a butterfly. The lesson meets the standard course of study for third grade with the discussion of a life cycle of an insect.
Alignment:
Standard 3: Indicator 1: Teachers have knowledge of basic life science concepts including: This activity meets this indicator through the discussion of the life cycle of the caterpillar. The teacher must have the knowledge of this cycle in order for the lesson to be successfully taught.
Standard 3: Indicator 4: Teachers have knowledge of controversial issues and how they impact learning, including evolution and genetics.
The completion of this lesson meets this indicator because it displays the knowledge of the teacher as he/she instructs the students on the evolution of the caterpillar into the butterfly.
