Tips for Test Taking

Folders (Lg.) Tips for Test Taking

Now that you are a sophomore in high school you should be noticing that studying for a test or should I say, “cramming”, the night before is not enough.  Actually this is something you probably faced as freshman.  When you “cram” for a test you are just storing the information in short-term memory.  In other words, you are just memorizing information for the test.  If “cramming” is the way you study, are you learning the information?  No…as soon as the test is over the information you thought you learned is forgotten about.  Then when finals come around all the information you need is just a glimpse in your mind.  If you would have reviewed your notes every night, and studied for your tests well in advance…studying for the final would just be review.

Test Anxiety

Surprised Face (Lg.) Test Anxiety

Imagine you walk into 3rd period, you take your seat, the bell rings, and your teacher begins handing out the chapter test.  You begin to look at your test and your stomach begins to turn, your palms begin to sweat, and you cannot remember anything.  What makes it even worse, is you review your notes from the day every night, do all your homework, and studied hard.  When this happens you may be experiencing test anxiety.  Test anxiety is stress, it is a nervous feeling and most of all it interferes with concentration.  Test anxiety can happen to many different types of students, from students who do not study much, all the way to people who just have too high of expectations for themselves.

Studying For Tests

Studying for Tests
There are many different ways to study for a test, it can vary from person to person, and it can even depend on the subject.  However, some things remain common.  When you are studying for a test it should be quiet, well-lit area, and no distractions.  Also do not try to study the night before a test, you may also want to take 5-minute breaks here and there so your brain is not overloaded.

Getting Along With Your Teachers

Getting Along with Your Teachers
Teachers are not here to make your life miserable…they are here to help you learn that certain subject.  Teachers do not give homework just to keep you from watching your favorite T.V. show, or from socializing.  It is part of the learning process.  Communication with your teacher is key regardless if you are struggling or succeeding in class.
