Social Studies Lesson Plans

Rationale for Social Studies Lessons

Context:

As part of my Block II requirements, I created three social studies lesson plans with the first grade NCSCOS curriculum in mind.  These lessons were created as a mini unit based on the book The Ant and the Grasshopper and economics.  The first lesson focuses on wants and needs, the second on savings, and the third lesson focuses on goods and services.  All three lessons were submitted to Dr. Mamola, however, only the first lesson was taught to the students during my practicum experience.

Impact:

Through exploring the story of the ant and the grasshopper first grade students will be able to identify their own wants and needs  (SS, 6.01).  Students will also learn about savings and sacrificing some things in order to get others (SS, 6.05).  Lastly, students will learn about goods and services with the book read and how we all use good and services everyday (SS, 6.07).

Alignment:

Standard 4, indicator 7.  I met this indicator by creating three lessons which focus on economic concepts such as wants and needs, savings, and goods and services.

Standard 11, indicator 1.  I met this indicator by requiring students to communicate their understanding of the concepts through discussions and writings.
