NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.
Indicator: Indicator 1: Teachers have knowledge of basic life science concepts including:
Detail: Characteristics of living things
Detail: Diversity of organisms and their environments
Detail: Life cycles, mutations, and adaptations
Detail: Structure and function of plants, animals, and their parts
Detail: Relationship between humans, organisms, and the environment (ecology)
Indicator: Indicator 2: Teachers have knowledge of basic physical science concepts including:
Detail: Factors affecting chemical reactions
Indicator: Indicator 3: Teachers have knowledge of basic earth science concepts including:
Detail: Planetary astronomy (objects in the sky, changes in the earth and sky, and weather)
Standard: Standard 10: Teachers provide active inquiry experiences in the teaching of science by using various questioning skills and developing science processing skills (predicting, classifying, measuring, inferring, interpreting, analyzing, and synthesizing).

 

Rationale for Photo Essay

Context:

The photo essay project was completed in my science methods class during the spring of 2006 for Dr. Goodman.  The project required me to take pictures using a digital camera of science in my surroundings.  Using PowerPoint, I created a slide show of the pictures which included critical thinking questions based on the photograph.  

Impact:

I can use the photo essay project in my classroom to allow students to establish real life connections to science.  Older students will be able to use digital cameras and create their own photo essay with critical thinking questions. 

Alignment:

Standard 3, indicator 1.  I met this indicator because the photo essay poses basic life science concepts using the turtles, ducks, trees, and human beings.  The questions require students to think of why these living things have certain characteristics.

Standard 3, indicator 2.  I met this indicator by including questions and pictures focusing on physical science with the photograph of the nail rusting and the candle being lit. 

Standard 3, indicator 3.  I met this indicator by including basic Earth science concepts.  The photo essay poses questions about planetary astronomy such as the clouds, weather, and the sun.

Standard 10 - I met this standard because the photo essay contains a variety of questions which require students to use processing skills to make the connection between things they see in everyday life and science.
