Rationale for Service Learning Project
Context:
I developed and completed this service learning project in partial fulfillment of Dr. Mamola course during my Block II semester at Appalachian State University. I first researched the project and decided to adopt an animal from the North Carolina Zoo. The students of Mrs. Howell's first grade class at Mountain View Elementary School learned about endangered animals, how we can save them, raised money, adopted two animals, and learned more information about those animals.
Impact:
Through the service project students were able to meet many of the NCSCOS standards for first grade. Students participated in volunteering and voting on animals for socials studies, tallieing the votes up for math, and learning about animals and their needs through books for science and language arts.
Alignment:
Standard 4, indicator 11. I met this indicator by promoting qualities of good citizens through having a mock election and raising money for animals as part of community service.
Standard 11, indicator 4. I met this indicator by incorporating mathematics through using tally marks to determine the results of the mock election.
Standard 16, indicator 1. I met this indicator by allowing students to carry their service project home to their communities in order to raise money and inform others on how to save animals.
Standard 16, indicator3. I met this indicator by sending a letter home to parents and getting them involved with the community service project.
Standard 16, indicator 7. I met this indicator by getting the students involved in volunteering and saving endangered species.
