Rationale for Hispanic Portfolio

Context

During my block II semester at Appalachian State University, myself and a group of peers were required to research Hispanics and put together a portfolio in partial fulfillment of Learner Diversity for Dr. Julie Horton.  As a group we had to find current research about Hispanics, children's literature, famous Hispanics, resources for Hispanics, stereotypes about Hispanics, and how Hispanics learn.  I was responsible for two children's books and current research, which are attached bellow.  I have a hard copy of the Hispanic Portfolio for my personal reference.

Impact

Using the portfolio, I will be better equipped for Hispanic students in my classroom. I will be able to use the portfolio as a resource to ensure Hispanic students and their families have the best educational experience possible.  I can refer to the portfolio for teaching strategies, resources, literature, and facts about the Hispanic culture.

Alignment

The Hispanic Portfolio aligns with the following teaching standards:

Standard 14, indicator 1.  I met this indicator by researching and addressing the Hispanics attitudes toward the learning process.  I will be able to use the portfolio to understand how Hispanics students learn and how to use their strengths and weaknesses in the classroom.

Standard 14, indicator 4.  I met this indicator by learning about the Hispanic culture and their backgrounds.  Prior to completing the portfolio I knew very little about Hispanic families.  Now I am educated on cultural differences and can embrace different points of view. Using the portfolio I am able to see the differences between Hispanic students and other students in the classroom and know strategies for effective teaching of Hispanic students

Standard 14, indicator 5.  I met this indicator by researching common assumptions and stereotypes about Hispanics.  Using this knowledge I am able to model teaching which avoids such bias.
