George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Virginia. When he was 11 years old his father died.  George had very little schooling, but taught himself to be a woodsman and surveyor.  Washington grew to be over 6 feet tall.  this was not very common during the  1700s.

As a young man, Washington joined the Virginia militia (the colonial army).

In 1759 he fell in love and married Martha Custis.

Before he was president Washington was chosen as the Commander in Chief of the Colonial Army and would fight in the Revolutionary war.  In 1776 the Colonists declared their independence from the British. George was a smart leader and very resourceful.  He, and the French, helped the colonists defeat the British and win the war in 1781.  After many violent battles the Americans were finally independent.

George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. He served as President from April 1789 until March 1797 (two terms). His Vice-President was John Adams.  John Adams later became the 2nd president of the US.

Washington was unanimously elected to be President of the United States of America each term. Unanimous means that everyone voted for George Washington.  He is the only president to ever be elected unanimously.

When George Washington was President New York City was the Capitol of the United States.  The White House in Washington, D.C. was not built yet.

During Washington's presidency, the Bill of Rights (the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution) was adopted. The Bill of Rights guarantees the rights of the American people. (The Bill of Rights is a very important document!)

One interesting fact about George Washington is that he wore false teeth made from hippopotamus ivory.
