Standard 2.7 Physical Education

Jumping Rope 2 (Lg.)

Education candidates have a responsibility to their students to know, understand, and utilize movement and physical activity in the classroom to help students develope an active and healthy lifestyle. It is important that educators understand and model healthy habits and behaviors, and recognize the many opprotunities throughout the day to integrate physical movement in the classroom. Educators can collaborate with their school's physical educators throughout the year and integrate the academic curriculum into the time they are allowed for physical movement. Physical movement can also be utilized in the classroom to help students to stay alert and understand concepts. By using physical activity to enhance student's learning experiences, they are being giving the opportunity to live healthy and learn at the same time.

Integrating Mathematics into Physical Education

Math Kids (Lg.)

The lesson plan included for download bellow is a simple example of ways that physical movement and academic curriculum can be integrated. The lesson bellow not only helps students to practice telling time on an analoge clock, but has students practicing adding and subtracting. The lesson is geared towards second grade students, and is meant for use in a physical education setting rather than a classroom setting. Lessons like this can be modified for a classroom environment so that educators are able to provide opportunities for students to move throughout the day.
