Artifact 38 - 2 Examples of CTSO recruitment activities for the Computer Information Systems Program
The Computer Information Systems program is fully involved with the Career and Technical Student Organization “Future Business Leaders of America” (FBLA). FBLA is a co-curricular organization, which means we have 100% student participation on the local level. Co-curricular means that the FBLA organization is an official part of the business education curriculum.
The major recruitment activity we have for our local members to become regional and state members is our school-wide assembly that all business students must attend during the second week of school. This meeting provides all the information that students need to understand the purpose of the co-curricular organization and the importance of why one should join on the regional and state levels. During this meeting, PowerpPoint projects are presented to the students to recap previous student involvement in FBLA.
Another recruitment activity is for all students to view the FBLA-PBL website http://www.vafbla-pbl.org/ . Students view this website and learn useful and fun information about FBLA.
Artifact 39 - Evidence of Community Service Project(s) of the Computer Information Systems Program
The Future Business Leaders of America Club (FBLA) of the Lee County Career & Technical Center is involved in many different aspects of community service projects.
Each year the Lee County Chamber of Commerce sponsors its Annual Tobacco Festival Parade. Our FBLA Chapter enters a float in the civic divisions. Several members participate in building the float and also riding the float through the parade.
During the year, FBLA members serve breakfast to all teachers and staff. Members will set up a cart of juice, coffee, and doughnuts on each floor and in each building to show appreciation to the teachers for all their dedication and hard work.
Gold Ribbons are sold for $1.00 0 each to be displayed on the wall of Good Samaritans with the name of the donor taped on the ribbon. All proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes.
FBLA students participate in Dress for Success Day which consist of students dressing in business attire as they make their way to each of their classes. Also FBLA students participate in FBLA Spirit Day where members and advisers' show pride in FBLA by dressing in FBLA shirts and putting up posters about the club throughout the school.
During our School Division Open House each year FBLA sets up a table at the entrance to welcome students and parents. Members bring in finger foods and hot apple cider to be served while giving visitors an opportunity to learn more about the club and the benefits of becoming a member.
Artifact 40 - Evidence of teacher participation in CTSO at local, reg., state, nat'l. levels
All of the business education teachers at the Lee Career Center are very active in different areas of FBLA.
Each year advisors attend the Fall Conference at the University Of Virginia College at Wise. The chapter is represented by several members and advisors.
During the 2009-2010 school year seven members were able to advance from the regional competition to state competition in competitive events.
A group of sixteen FBLA members attended the State Leadership Conference. These members learned much more about FBLA and leadership through a variety of activities. Eight members represented the club by acting as voting delegates. Two students this year, placed at the state level and one of the students was able to represent our FBLA Program and National Leadership Conference that was held in Louisville, Kentucky.
We also hold several regional and state offices in FBLA for the 2010-2011 school year. Two Lee County Career & Technical Center FBLA members ran successful campaigns for office and proved themselves to be among 'simply the best' of Virginia's FBLA members. Caitlyn Russell was elected President of the UVA College at Wise FBLA Region. She will also serve as a vice-president at the state level. Hannah Fitzgerald was elected to the office of state reporter and will help to inform all the regional and local FBLA chapters about the news from the state chapter.
