Artifact 5 - Future Industry Trends
Business Education and the trends of business education change daily. Providing students with current and relevant knowledge of the subject at hand, you will notice an increase in learning and a desire to learn more. The use of technology in day to day life is an invaluable process of learning.
Examples of current trends in the computer information system program are evident in many aspects. One of the main trends in our program is allowing students the opportunity to create documents and place them on a server where the student can access those documents in any classroom in our school system setting. If a student were to transfer from one high school to another all their data files would automatically transfer with them electronically. Students may be working on a project in the Computer Information Systems classroom and can go to the school library to complete their task without having to have a portable saving device.
Another example of training trends is our portable Apple Laptop Labs. All students in the Computer Information Systems department have the opportunity throughout the school year to check out Apple Laptop computers for a period of time. This allows students to learn the process of using a laptop computer compared to their desktop computer.
One of the many things we will see and are already seeing is the capabilities of our high school students to complete course work via Blackboard Technology. Many colleges are offering course work through the process of Blackboard. Students attend class via online attendance and submit their coursework online. We also have the opportunity to offer different types of computer operating systems to our students, such as Windows and Macintosh.
The future of Business Education and all education areas will be experiencing a vast change in the way they prepare their students, present materials to students, and communicate with their students.
Artifact 6 - CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS OF THE COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROGRAM
Curriculum enhancements for the Computer Information System Program change yearly if not daily. With the fast pace of technology our program must stay up to date on all technology and curriculum enhancements.
I am pleased to speak about our portable Apple Computer Laptop lab that we can offer to our students. We have number a of Apple Computers which students can check out for a period of time. This allows students to learn more than one computer operating system and enables many students the opportunity to use a laptop.
The computer information system program also has a number of digital cameras that are available for student use. Students can then have the opportunity to create photoshop documents. Our program recently purchased a UniBind Machine. The Advanced Computer Information System class creates a school yearbook for the Child Care Program in our school.
All students have the opportunity to work with a Career Coach from our local community college. This enables all students in the program as well as other Career & Technical programs to understand what is needed for the workplace or college setting.
Artifact 7 -INTERACTIONS WITH INDUSTRY WITHIN THE COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROGRAM
The Computer Information Program works with several areas of industry throughout the school year. One project we host each year is our Career Fair. The Career Fair allows several different industries to come to our school and promote their workforce. We have local banks, federal prisons, construction companies, real estate companies, hospitals and many more that attend the Career Fair. Students visit with each area and gain insight and information on what the industry is looking for in employees.
A second program we have with industry is our "Student Highlight Program". This program allows students to be nominated for the program using a criteria form. Once the nominations are complete, a committee of teachers selects the student for the month. This student is awarded a monetary gift and certificate from one of our sponsoring industry members.
Our program also has a Business Education Advisory Council. The council includes members of the industry and community colleges. Within our Advisory Council we discuss the needs of the industry and what the industry is looking for in employees. Students may present PowerPoint projects to the Advisory Council to the keep the council up to date on where the Computer Information Program is with current industry qualifications.
A fun project we do each year within the industry setting is the Mountain Empire Community College Business Spring Fling. Each year the business department at our local community college invites all business students to attend the business spring fling. The spring fling informs students of up-to-date courses that are being provided by the college, informative information about national certification ,and what industries are looking for from their graduates.
