Context:
I performed this spelling assessment at W.A. Young Elementary School with a 2nd grade class. The assessment was given in the classroom during a reading class on 11/7/2005. The student was told what the assessment was for and not to worry about it counting as a grade for their teacher. I told them to just relax and do the best they could do with their spelling. The students were comfortable at first, but then they were ready to finish after about two spelling lists. I said the word aloud, used a sentence with the word in it, and then said the word again. Impact:
This impacted me and informed me of different learning levels each student is on. By giving the spelling assessment, I feel much more prepared to give another one. I feel confident in my ability to keep the students motivated and work at their highest ability level. The spelling assessment was important because I could see the different abilities and what needs to be done to improve their spelling on an individual basis. I can provide spelling lists that goes beyond average and give more challenging ones based on their levels. I can improve their spelling and get them to use these words they have learned in their writing.
Alignment:
I met Standard 1,
Indicator 1: In my reflection I stated ways I could help my student perform better in spelling. I put them into different levels based on ability and other information I observed. I know students are at different levels and look at spelling errors coming up with ideas to help these students. For more detailed information look at the attachment.
