Myself and Others Lesson Plan

Context:

I taught this health unit on respecting yourself and others to a third grade class at Millis Road Elementary during my student teaching.  I used resources that were provided with the textbook and also came up with some of my own ideas. I had to used Microsoft Word to create activities. Once I finished my unit my cooperating teacher looked over my lesson plans.

Impact:

This health unit impacted me and the students. It was my first health unit I had ever taught in the classroom. It helped me prepare early, find different resources, and manage my time. I had to fit in the important parts because I did run out of time. The students now know ways they respect themselves in others and use these skills in the classroom. They are skills the students will use every year as they progress with each grade level.

Alignment:

I met Standard 5, Indicator 1, by setting the foundation for good health by respecting yourself first and then you can respect others. We talked about the feelings we could encounter if we lived emotionally healthy.

I met Standard 5, Indicator 2, by realizing conflict and respect are issues that students deal with in the classroom and out on the playground. I used real life situations relating it to the students.

I met Standard 13, by having the students practice the "I message" to express how they feel which is a good skill to use when in conflict that will help maintain healthy relationships with family and friends.
